DT After Dark: A live television experience

MTN (Minneapolis Television Network) to Broadcast Unique Live Music Event Friday, July 24th, 7-8pm: DT AFTER DARK

DT After Dark will be an on-air “party” hosted by hypermodernist wordfunk outfit Downrange Telemetrics, something of a Twin Cities “supergroup” that includes poet/singer Becca Barniskis, bassist Anthony Cox, drummer Martin Dosh, guitarist Nick Jaffe and visual artist/shadowcaster Lori Brink who did the production design for the show and will also be improvising live visuals.

DT After Dark is the pilot episode of what may well become a regular broadcast on MTN. The show is loosely inspired by the groundbreaking format pioneered by Hugh Hefner in 1959 with the first broadcast of Playboy’s Penthouse which brought together guests like Sammy Davis Jr., Sarah Vaughn, Lenny Bruce, and feminist author Rona Jaffe in a casual, largely improvised cocktail party-like setting that featured performances, interviews and conversation. What set the show apart in its day was its weird mix of “sophisticated” Playboy bunny chauvinism, and its embrace of artists often excluded from the mainstream because of their color or politics. The audience mixed with the hosts and guests throughout the show, a particularly edgy move for the time given that both audience and guests were racially integrated, which made the show too radical for network television (Hefner syndicated it).

The live broadcast will feature performances by Downrange Telemetrics and special guests, improvisations and interviews that actively engage the studio audience in unexpected ways, and “ad” segments created and scored by Downrange Telemetrics. The show will create space for the kinds of spontaneity and surprises typical of the most beloved live television shows of the 20th Century. It will also carry forward the idea that a television studio is an excellent place to cross genre, color, and political lines in the process of making music and art.
